|Description:||On Sunday April 21, from 12 noon to 4:00 pm, the Somerset and Middlesex County Boards of Agriculture will present 'Ag in Action' Day. This family farm open house event will be held at beautiful and scenic Suydam Farms in Franklin Township, Somerset, NJ. 'Ag in Action' Day is a free farm tour and open house hosted at one of the area's premiere farms. The Somerset and Middlesex County Boards of Agriculture, along with cooperation from Rutgers Cooperative Extension and other county and state agricultural agencies, have planned a full afternoon of enjoyable and educational experiences for children and adults alike.
The spacious 300 acre Suydam Farms is located at the corner of Route 27 and Skillman Lane. It has been a part of New Jersey agriculture since 1713, and remains an active and working farm to this day.
Farm animals (cattle, goats, pigs, sheep, and chickens to name a few) and equipment will be on display. Free wagon tours around the farm will feature experts to explain farming processes and answer your questions. Information from state and local agricultural agencies will also be on display. Some of the expected demonstrations / exhibits include:
· Planting Christmas trees
· Shearing sheep
· Milking dairy goats
· Installing drip irrigation systems
· Tractor plowing and planting
· Greenhouse seed starting
· Draft horse plowing
· Kids programming
Agriculture in Action Day - 2013 will be held rain or shine on Sunday April 21, from 12 noon to 4 pm. There is no entrance fee or charge for parking at the farm. The Somerset and Middlesex County Boards of Agriculture invite everyone to come tour the farm, have fun with your family, and speak with the farmers in Central NJ who call Somerset or Middlesex County their home.
