Seasonally the coast of New Jersey is home to a variety of shark species that are caught for commercial and recreational harvest, while some of these species are federally prohibited. The sandbar and sand tiger sharks are large prohibited coastal sharks that range from MA to the Gulf of Mexico, and they commonly occur during the summer months along the coast of NJ. Although prohibited, these species are targeted in recreational fishing coast-wide which could impact population levels. This talk will describe the biology of these prohibited sharks and some of the current research and issues impacting these species.
