Ferns add a unique beauty, texture, delicacy, and visual interest in our landscapes, garden beds, and interior spaces. But their humdrum reputation as the go-to plant for shady or damp spaces overlooks their diversity and cloaks our appreciation for nature’s ingenuity in their graceful fronds. Your choice to grow and care for ferns puts you in direct contact with how nature solved one of its most flabbergasting puzzles - how did plants colonize dry land? This presentation covers a layperson’s view of the unique botanical characteristics and evolutionary significance of ferns as well as planting tips and care, suitable companion plants, and photos of specific ferns that grow well in our area.
