Description: The goal of this course is to teach the basics of keeping honey bees. Participants (minimum age 14) will gain a general knowledge of honey bee biology as well as how to care for honey bees throughout the year, including equipment assembly, obtaining your bees, and harvesting of honey. We will focus on the Langstroth hive and related equipment. Students will be taught how to recognize common honey bee ailments and pests, as well as the methods for treating them. At least one hands-on field session is planned. This course also covers the history of bees and state bee laws. Upon completion, students will know how to manage honey bee colonies for maximum bee health and honey production. Class will take place: September 13, 20, 27 and October 4, 11, 18.
