Description:

Turf Day Program, January 7, 2025
9:00 am – 10:00
Implementation of Best Establishment Practices Can Reduce Weed Encroachment and Herbicide Use
Brad Park, Laboratory Researcher, Rutgers Sport Turf Research and Education

This presentation will discuss turfgrass integrated pest management techniques that can be applied when establishing turf on school grounds, public parks, commercial sites and residential properties that suppress weed encroachment leading to a reduction in herbicide use.

10:00 am – 11:00
Application Methods and Programs for Crabgrass and Japanese Stiltgrass Control
Dan Tuck, Research Technician, Rutgers NJAES Turfgrass Center

A weed control research update covering Japanese Stiltgrass control programs, and post-emergent application methods and timings for crabgrass. Proper application methods such as product, formulation and equipment selection will be emphasized.

11:00 am – 12:00 pm
How Turfgrass Species and Soil Affect Fertilization Requirement
Dr. James Murphy, Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Management

Turf managers make decisions about fertilization practices that promote healthy growth and protect ground and open water resources. Healthy turf is less susceptible to insect, disease and weed pressure. This presentation will explain how turf grass species and soil conditions are important factors when making this management decision. The type of turfgrass species growing in the area being managed, such as residential and commercial properties, school grounds and pubic parks, determine nutrient needs and timing of applications. Soil conditions also need to be considered to optimize nutrient uptake by turfgrass.

12:00 – 1:15 pm LUNCH BREAK

1:15 – 2:15 pm
Integrated Management of White Grubs: Monitoring and Chemical, Cultural, and Biological Control
Dr. Albrecht Koppenhöfer, Extension Specialist in Turf Entomology

This presentation will cover the biology and ecology of white grubs, their monitoring, and chemical, cultural, and biological method to management them. How to optimize product selection and application timing to cover other potential insect pests with the white grub treatments will also be discussed.

2:15 -3:15
Healthy microbiome - The unsung hero of turfgrass disease suppression
Dr. Ming Yi Chou, Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Pathology

This presentation will talk about pathogens and beneficial microbes in the larger microbial population context and case studies from the latest research. The information in the talk justifies the precision fungicide program and provides practical suggestions on how to reduce fungicide use while maintaining excellent turfgrass quality.
