Landscape Day January 9, 2025
9:00 am - 10:00 am “Cultural Practices to Reduce Disease Pressure” by Tim Waller, Rutgers Agricultural Extension Agent, Cumberland County. Tim will speak about key plant diseases seen in landscapes, parks, school grounds and green campuses. With a focus on proper culture Tim will discuss managing soil and growing conditions to maximize disease resistance and minimize the damage to shrubs and small trees. IPM tactics, including biological, cultural and chemical will be presented. Research-based recommendations from Rutgers will be shared.
10:00 am - 11:00am “Pesticide Regulations that Affect Landscape Managers” by Spencer Kerkhof, NJDEP Pesticide Control Program Outreach Representative.
Spencer will present the latest regulations and guidelines from the DEP, including record-keeping, pesticide handling and storage and more.He will also cover the basics that all pesticide applicators need to know. This is crucial for landscape managers, school grounds keepers, and others who manage plant pests commercially.
11:00 am -12:00 pm “Plant Diagnostic Lab Update; Pest to Expect in 2025” by Rich Buckley, Director of Rutgers Plant Pest Diagnostic Lab. Rich will discuss key insect and disease pests seen in 2024 and offer specific recommendations for managing them. Rich will share research-based recommendations from Rutgers and other land-grant universities and discuss IPM tactics—including biological and chemical.
12:00-1:15 pm Lunch Break
1:15 pm - 2:15 pm “Using Native Plants in the Landscape: What Research Shows” by Bill Errickson, Rutgers Agricultural Extension Agent, Monmouth County. Bill will present research-based guidelines for using native plants, including greater pest resistance and less management challenges. He will cover best plants to use and discuss management of diseases, and cultural problems.
2:15 pm -3:15 pm “Best Small Trees & Shrubs for 2025” by Bruce Crawford, Director of Horticulture, Morris County Parks Commission. Bruce will share recommendations for best-performing shrubs and small trees for north Jersey landscapes, school grounds, parks and green campuses. He will present key pests that threaten these plants and discuss IPM tactics for minimizing damage.
